Day Three in Japan! 天狗

26232092_10214767256765426_6486856689180156541_o                Very tired tonight and ready for bed so this one is going to be short and sweet! Snowboarded Tengu today! It is the peak in the picture above. Same picture as yesterdays blog, but I just cropped out the peak skied today to show everyone. It was such a fun ski! Long POW lap off a peak! It was ripping wind up there and dumping!! Low visibility! Skied it in a few different pitches to not lose each other. Shredded with Lee and Matthias again! Video below is the first pitch. Tengu (天狗, “heavenly dog”) are a type of legendary creature found in Japanese folk religion. Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon, the Tengu were originally thought to take the forms of bird of prey and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics. The earliest Tengu were pictured with beaks, but this feature has often been humanized as an unnaturally long nose, which today is widely considered the Tengu’s defining characteristic in the popular imagination. Buddhism long held that the Tengu were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. Their image gradually softened, however, into one of protective, if still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests! The second line we skied was a North facing shot a pretty short skin away from the top of the resort. Great POW for maybe 1,000ft, then traversed hardcore back towards the resort, skied a spine like ridge, and dropped into a gully/creek to get out! The spine ridge was definitely the sickest part of this lap! Beginning to get more comfortable with the spine/ridge skiing here!! The way out of this one was so hard and silly!!! Had to cross a river and SOAKED our feet!!! Good thing it was the end of the day! Crazy sore and tired… It was snowing super hard up high all day and began dumping down in town around 3:00PM!! Tomorrow should be really great!!! POW DAY!!!!!!!!!!!! Probably about 3-4in fell during the day while skiing! Who knows how much dropped up there the rest of today and tonight. “Listen to what you know and never what you fear.” Random quote I just heard. Anyway, snow felt great! Some slough from new snow. About 30mph winds on the day. “Everyday is a journey and the journey itself is home.” Another quote I just heard! Loving these quotes so want to share with you all! We hiked about 2,500ft and snowboarded about 10,000ft today! Thank you lift access to backcountry!! So much for a short post. Going to bed. Love you all!
